This training session is designed to support primary care clinicians across the Black Country in improving early recognition and timely management of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) in children and young people.

Delivered by Jessica Rhead, Lead Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (RWT),

The session will focus on identifying the early signs and symptoms of T1D, understanding clinical red flags, and navigating local referral pathways to ensure prompt specialist input.

Attendees will gain practical knowledge on:

  • Recognising key presenting features of Type 1 Diabetes in children, including subtle and non-specific symptoms
  • Identifying ‘red flag’ signs that may indicate diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) or urgent deterioration
  • Understanding when and how to initiate urgent same-day referrals versus routine pathways
  • Applying local Black Country referral processes and escalation protocols
  • Improving safety-netting, communication with families, and reducing the risk of delayed diagnosis

This training aims to strengthen confidence in primary care decision-making, reduce missed or late diagnoses, and ultimately improve outcomes for children and young people.
